He was cast to play Anwar Kharral, a Pakistani youth. Although ostensibly a Muslim, Anwar drinks, takes drugs, engages in premarital sex, and has a homosexual best friend. In 2007, he was hired by Danny Boyle to play the lead in Slumdog Millionaire, replacing his original selection, Bollywood actor Ruslaan Mumtaz, who was "too good looking." Slumdog ended up being one of the best films of 2008, winning eight Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director. Patel won several awards for his performance, including a British Independent Film Award for most promising newcomer, and a Critic's Choice Award for best young actor. He was also nominated for a Screen Actors Guild award for best supporting actor, although in the film he does not play a supporting role.
