Executive summary: Founder of Abercrombie & Fitch David Abercrombie worked as a railroad surveyor, prospector and miner, before opening Abercrombie Company, his Manhattan camping, fishing, and hunting gear store, in 1892. Ezra Fitch was one of Abercrombie's best customers, who bought a share of the business in 1900, and a larger share in 1904, renaming the shop Abercrombie & Fitch. Both men were notoriously short-tempered, and argued constantly about how to run the shop until Abercrombie quit the company in 1907, selling his share to Fitch. He later established the David T. Abercrombie Company, selling goods for explorers and sportsmen, which spawned a subsidiary for international exports.
In its early decades as a store for rugged sportsmen, Abercrombie & Fitch outfitted many of the world's best-known expeditions, with customers including Arctic explorer Richard E. Byrd, aviator Amelia Earhart, writer Ernest Hemingway, and rough-rider Theodore Roosevelt. The present-day incarnation of the company offers no boots, tents, or winterwear, but instead operates mall stores offering, according to corporate PR, "the coolest, high quality, All-American lifestyle clothing for every guy and girl".
