Ezra Fitch was an attorney but an avid sportsman in his free time, and a prime customer at the Abercrombie Company outdoor equipment store. He befriended the store's proprietor, David Abercrombie, and became Abercrombie's business partner in 1900. Fitch took control of the company in 1904, renaming the store Abercrombie & Fitch, and Abercrombie left the business in 1907. Since Fitch's death, A&F has evolved into a chain of upscale fashion shops, best known for its ads featuring semi-clothed and apparently starving urban youth. Long after his death, Fitch was the namesake of the "Ezra Fitch" sub-brand of men's wear sold at A&F stores in the early 2000s but since discontinued, and from 2005-07 "Ezra Fitch" was a brand of cologne sold at A&F stores.
