Five children win golden tickets entitling them to tours of the Wonka Chocolate Factory -- four varieties of brat and Charlie Bucket, whose life thus far has been rather miserable. Various dooms befall the unworthy as the tour, conducted by Gene Wilder playing Wonka in one of his finest performances, proceeds. Dahl did not care for this film but it is the best family picture of its era.
