COMPANY

Founded by Rowland H. Macy in 1858 in New York City. It went public in 1922. The company's flagship store on New York's Herald Square, opened in 1902, has been billed as the world's largest store since its expansion in 1924. After bankruptcy in 1991, the company was merged into Federated Department Stores in 1994. Federated assumed the Macy's name in 2007. There are presently over 800 Macy's stores in the US.
