Anheuser-Busch
COMPANY
Founded 1852 by George Schneider as The Bavarian Brewery. Near bankruptcy three years later, it was refinanced with a loan from soapmaker Eberhard Anheuser, who became owner when the business defaulted in 1857. Renaming it E. Anheuser & Company, he hired his son-in-law Adolphus Busch as general manager in 1862. During prohibition the company retooled and sold ginger ale, root beer, chocolate and grape sodas, baker's yeast, and a "de-alcholized beverage" called Bevo.
Now markets beer under the brands Budweiser, Bud Light, Busch, and Michelob. Also owns Manufacturers Railway Company, and Precision Printing & Packaging. Long-time owner of numerous theme parks including Busch Gardens and the SeaWorld chain, both of which were sold to Blackstone Group in 2009.
Acquired by Inbev in 2008, forming Anheuser-Busch InBev.
