John R. Freeman was a prominent early 20th century civil engineer. He was the chief designer of the original Charles River Dam in Boston Harbor, drew up the first plans for the Hetch Hetchy aqueduct that still draws water from Yosemite Park to provide for San Francisco's water supply, helped design the Catskill Mountain water supply system that supplies much of New York City's water, and contributed to the engineering of the Panama Canal. Also a longtime insurance executive, he was an early proponent of sprinkler systems and smoke vents for theaters and public halls, widespread installation of fire hydrants, and improved standards for construction in earthquake-prone areas. He was a founder of the National Fire Protection Association.
