With his colleague Robert Wachter he coined the term 'hospitalist' for physicians whose practice primarily involves hospitalized patients, and Goldman created the first academic program for training hospitalists. He also laid out the Coronary Heart Disease Policy Model, which prioritizes heart disease therapies, and he has been co-editor of the medical resource Cecil Textbook of Medicine since 1999.
