Molecular biologist Susan L. Lindquist was among the first scientists to propose that proteins could be a non-genetic carrier of inheritance. She has conducted groundbreaking research in protein conformation, showing that most biological processes include alterations in protein conformation, and that numerous heart conditions are related to structural irregularities and the "folding" of proteins her work has been described as "unveiling the origami of life." Lindquist's research has advanced the scientific understanding of evolution, gene regulation, and stress tolerance, and has had applications in the study of Alzheimer's disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and bovine spongiform encephalitis, commonly called Mad Cow disease.
