Briefly the Commissioner of Baseball, Bart Giamatti suffered from a hereditary neuromuscular disorder, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, that causes nerves to the extremities to slowly degenerate. There is no known cure, and a 50/50 genetic chance of inheriting the disease if a parent has it.
