Played just one season in the big leagues, batting .218 as a second baseman for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1959, but made his mark as a manager. Brought the Cincinnati Reds of the "Big Red Machine" era to World Series championships in 1975 and 1976, then left to manage the Detroit Tigers, leading that team to a World Series victory in 1984. Refused to oversee a strike-breaking team as the 1995 season approached, a public stand which was instrumental in pressuring Major League Baseball owners to settle the 232-day strike instead of trying to start the season with minor league players.
