Both of his parents died while he was young, and in 1868 he sailed for America. Virtually penniless and speaking little English when he arrived, he was able to support himself as a manual laborer. He came to Colorado in 1873 and briefly worked in the beer business in Denver, before settling in the town of Golden. There he became enamored with the area's now-famous Rocky Mountain spring water, and converted an abandoned leather tannery into the first Coors brewery.
Colorado enacted prohibition in 1916, and the federal government followed suit in 1920. This left Coors unable to sell his beloved beer, so instead his company marketed a de-alcoholized "near beer" called Mannah, as well as cement, malted milk, and porcelain. On 5 June 1929, while staying at the luxurious Cavalier Hotel in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Coors jumped to his death from a sixth-floor window. Prohibition was repealed four and a half years after his death.
