After a few short-lived TV shows, in 1953 he started Lunch with Soupy Sales, which became The Soupy Sales Show, shown on ABC after 1959. It was a children's program with significant adult viewership whose high point was Sales receiving a shaving-cream pie in the face. At some point Frank Sinatra asked to be victimized, and soon all manner of celebrities were scheduling guest appearances to achieve rapid dignity loss by means of pie. Sales became known almost exclusively for that act, a typecast which both enhanced and damaged his career. Sales claims to have thrown 19,000 pies and received 25,000 over a span of more than forty years. His show faded with the rise of cartoons, though it was revived briefly in 1978 as The New Soupy Sales Show. In later years he was a panelist on What's My Line?, hosted a WNBC radio show, appeared at clubs into his 70s, and continued to perfect the fine art of pie throwing. He died from cancer in 2009 at a hospital in the Bronx, also suffering other undisclosed illnesses.
