Morales, largely of indigenous ancestry -- like 70% of the population, and quite unlike the traditional leaders of Bolivia -- holds views that are in direct opposition to longstanding American attempts to eliminate the coca crop, and has stated an intention of nationalizing the Bolivian natural gas deposits. He was an ally of the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.
