A young man serving a prison sentence for the murder of an autistic boy shares his sad story with his English teacher.
Leland Fitzgerald, a sixteen-year old boy guilty of the murder of an autistic child he can't remember committing, is taken under the wing of English teacher Pearl Madison while serving his sentence in a juvenile prison. Pearl, an aspiring professional novelist eager for an enticing story, grows enamored with Leland after learning that he is the son of renowned scribe Albert Fitzgerald; through interviews and details gleaned from a surreptitious journal kept in defiance of the detention center's rules, Pearl helps Leland piece together events leading to his fateful act of violence, doing so while coping with romantic indiscretions and failings in his own life.
