Arrogant martial arts master Huo Yuanjia wrongly kills another master over a lie told by one of his own students; his family is killed in revenge, friendships in tatters. Huo leaves the city for deep soul searching, staying a decade or more performing menial labor in a remote rural village. Returning to Shanghai he founds the Jing Wu Sports Federation, and seeks to uphold the honor of his country, China at the turn-of-the-century beleaguered by foreign influences and declaimed as the Sick Man of Asia.
