ABSTRACT Slim, an impoverished young waitress with dreams of a better life, happens upon an apparent line out of her situation when she falls in love with and marries wealthy contractor Mitch. Mitch's abusive tendencies come to the surface five years on from the birth of their first child, forcing Slim to go on the run; when Mitch threatens to track her down, Slim resolves to toughen herself up to a point where she is capable of stopping his madness by sheer force.
