The youngest daughter of California suburbanites contacts evil spirits through static received by the family television set. After the spirits ("poltergeists") kidnap the daughter, the family seeks the assistance of both parapsychologist Dr. Lesh and medium Tangina. Produced on a budget of $12M, despite the director credit this film is largely Steven Spielberg's creation. Received Oscar nominations for Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, and Best Sound Effects Editing.
