British prisoners-of-war in Burma are forced to construct a railroad bridge spanning the River Kwai; meanwhile an escapee from the camp joins a commando team whose mission is the destruction of the same bridge. Based on true events, though rather fictionalized. Won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Adaptation, Best Cinematography, Best Score and Best Editing; received an additional nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Entered 1997 into the National Film Registry.
