Anna Chlumsky is Vada Sultenfuss, the somewhat neglected 11-year-old daughter of a mortician and a mother who died in childbirth. She has a crush on her English teacher, and her father begins dating Shelly, who does makeup for the cadavers; Vada does not like the idea of this at all. The only friend this difficult child tolerates is the geeky Thomas J., played by Macaulay Culkin. Set in 1972, moving coming-of-age story is quirky, features good performances and a decent script.
