Apache leader Geronimo is on the warpath, so U.S. Cavalry is promised to accompany them on their journey, but are reassigned at the last minute. Characters are portrayed in depth, cinematography excellent; it set a new high bar for the Western. The film immediately transformed John Wayne from a B-movie actor to the A-list. Won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Thomas Mitchell and also Best Original Score, and received five other Oscar nominations including Best Picture.
