Ransom Stoddard, senior U.S. Senator, travels by train to the tiny western town of Shinbone for the funeral of Tom Doniphon, a man whom the press has never heard of. The Senator's political career has been built on his killing of the villainous Liberty Valance. We flashback to Ranse's arrival in the town as a fresh-faced attorney as he tells the true story surrounding Valance's death. Edith Head received an Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design. Entered 2007 into the National Film Registry.
