Manslaughter parolee Tom Joad arrives at the family home in Oklahoma, finding it deserted after a bank foreclosure. The family will head to California; he joins them in violation of parole. Outstanding performances and excellent cinematography capture the essence of the Great Depression. Ford won the Oscar for Best Director and Jane Darwell for Best Supporting Actress. Received additional nominations for Best Picture, and Best Screenplay, and Henry Fonda for Best Actor.
