Plus-sized Baltimore teenybopper Tracy Turnblad aspires to a dream impossible for a full figured gal, to be a regular on Corny Collins' dance show. While toned down compared to earlier John Waters efforts, still outrageous. Captures essence of the early 1960s. Divine, who played Tracy's mother Edna, died shortly after release. Became an enormously successful Broadway play, running for 2,642 performances; later remade as Hairspray (2007).
