A journalist feigns insanity and commits himself to an insane asylum, with the intent of solving a murder witnessed solely by three other inmates. Once committed, both his treatment and exposure to other inmates takes a particularly heavy toll on his mind; obtaining entrance may prove much easier than earning an exit. Lurid and ludicrous, it never lets up. Entered 1996 into the National Film Registry.
