Liggett Group
COMPANY
Maker of Chesterfield brand cigarettes. Formerly known as Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company, formed 1911 by order of an antitrust court. The name did exist prior to the ruling as an earlier company. Liggett & Myers changed its name in 1976 to Liggett Group, though the old name is still used internally. In 1980 Liggett was acquired by food and beverage conglomerate Grand Metropolitan for $575M, but in 1986 sold it to Brooke Partners for $137M. Liggett Group is presently 100% owned by Vector Group, successor to Brooke Partners.
