HSBC

COMPANY

Europe's largest banking concern, founded in 1865 by Thomas Sutherland as the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited. The only larger banking group is Citigroup.

HSBC was long aware of problems with money laundering under their institutional rubric and did nothing to report it. On 11 December 2012 the company agreed to admit violations of the Bank Secrecy Act and the Trading with the Enemy Act, and pay $1.9B fine and forfeiture. According to one Mexican drug lord, HSBC was "the place to launder money."
