Created 1983 by the merger of First & Merchants Bank with Virginia National Bankshares. This combined bank, Citizens & Southern/Sovran Bank, was acquired by North Carolina National Bank, becoming NationsBank in 1991. That bank merged with BankAmerica in 1998 to form Bank of America.
