Executive summary: The prodigal Sheen

Charlie Sheen grew up as Hollywood royalty, since his father is Hollywood actor Martin Sheen. In childhood, his best friends were Rob Lowe and Sean Penn. At 16 he dated 15-year-old Robin Wright, and at 19 he fathered a child with a 17-year-old girlfriend. He was an awful student but a standout pitcher for his high school baseball team, and was offered a scholarship to play college ball for the University of Kansas, but it was revoked when he was expelled from high school after being arrested for credit card fraud and possession of marijuana.

His best movies include Platoon with Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe, Wall Street with Michael Douglas, and Eight Men Out with D. B. Sweeney. On TV he starred in the sitcoms Spin City and Two and a Half Men. Among his better-known off-screen antics, he shot his fiancé Kelly Preston, pled no contest to charges of battery on porn star Brittany Ashland, and spent upwards of $50,000 on prostitutes provided by Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss. Sheen insists that he never paid for sex, but only paid to have Fleiss' employees leave after sex. In an interview with Maxim, Sheen estimated that he had slept with 5,000 women.

Sheen publicly acknowledged in 2015 that he had been diagnosed as HIV+ -- in 2011. In media coverage, sources close to Sheen estimated that he had been intimate with hundreds of women during those four years, often with condoms and often without. Sheen said that he told all his past sexual partners about his diagnosis, but on the day of his announcement six women publicly claimed that Sheen had bedded them without revealing his HIV+ status. Lawsuits are expected, and prosecution is a possibility, since it is illegal in numerous American jurisdictions for an HIV+ individual to knowingly have sexual contact without informing their partners.

In 1996, Sheen announced that he had been born again as a Christian, and in 1998 he was hospitalized after a drug overdose. Reflecting on his memories of the 1990s he once said, "I'd be drinking away, doing blow, popping pills, and telling myself I wasn't an addict because there wasn't a needle stuck in my arm." In 2011, however, he told reporters "I have never done or tried heroin in my life."

He met his first wife, model Donna Peele, when they filmed a cigarette commercial together in Japan, but they were separated six months after their wedding. Before marrying his second wife, actress Denise Richards, Sheen maintained that true love had reformed his wild ways, but when Richards filed for divorce in 2006 she claimed that Sheen had threatened her life, and that he frequently visited websites featuring "very young girls" and gay pornography. Sheen denied all of Richards' allegations, and insisted that the Sheen of the tabloids is not the real Sheen. He described himself as shy, introverted, and mellow.

After his third wife, former real estate agent Brooke Mueller, left him in 2010, Sheen's antics became more publicly visible, including several alcohol and (reportedly) cocaine-fueled binges involving prostitutes, porn stars, and strippers. Due to Sheen's "at home rehab" in early 2011 he was deemed unavailable to work, though he maintained that he was ready, willing, and able to perform. The final eight episodes of the eighth season of his hit sit-com Two and a Half Men were never filmed. Before and after being fired from the show and replaced by Ashton Kutcher, Sheen issued months of well-publicized insults for the program's creators and producers.

He has also been outspoken in his disbelief in the official story of September 11. While hesitant to put forward his own theory, Sheen said in a 2006 radio interview with Alex Jones that he believes there has been a massive cover-up of the facts. He bristles, though, at being called a conspiracy theorist. "It seems to me like 19 amateurs with box cutters taking over four commercial airliners and hitting 75% of their targets, that feels like a conspiracy theory. It raises a lot of questions."

Sheen's brother, Emilio Estevez, is an actor and director, and two other siblings, Ramon and Renée Estevez, have also had long if low-profile acting careers. Their uncle, Joe Estevez, has achieved almost legendary status among B-movie aficionados for his long résumé of low-budget action and horror films.
