After dropping out of university following a motorcycle accident in 1980, Sweeney was cast on Broadway for The Caine Mutiny Court Martial (1983), and was able to parlay that into appearing in Francis Ford Coppola's Gardens of Stone. But he is best remembered for playing Shoeless Joe Jackson in Eight Men Out, the story of the thrown 1919 World Series.
