Executive summary: Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History

As an interested alumnus, Gilder helped reorganize the investment of Yale's endowment, beginning in the 1970s. With the success of his short-selling strategy, his firm had $11B under management at its peak in 1999. Formerly interested in preserving battlefields, Gilder found a more productive ideological strategy in collecting historical documents. With fellow conservative Lew Lehrman, the pair began to amass a collection of over 50,000 documents and manuscripts from key moments in American history, using them to promote research and alternative historiography.
