Alexander Dallas Bache was the first President of the National Academy of Sciences, and spent his scientific career studying physical mechanics, magnetism, and meteorology. He founded the nation's second public high school, Central High in Philadelphia, and served as its first principal. In his latter years he was Superintendent of the US Office of Coast Survey, where he oversaw expansion of cartography, pilotage, magnetic forces, meteorology, topography and other research south to the Florida Keys and Gulf Stream. He was the great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin, and nephew of Vice President George M. Dallas.
