British geometer Michael Atiyah is known for his work in advanced algebra and topology, including the theory of complex manifolds, superstring theory in mathematical physics, and Yang-Mills equations and gauge theory. In collaboration with American mathematician Isadore Singer, he developed the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, which concerns the existence and singularity of solutions to linear partial differential equations of elliptic type.
