It was widely believed that Cleland was injured by his own grenade, but in fact it was found in 1999 to have been another soldier's grenade. After serving a long term as Georgia's Secretary of State, voters elected Cleland to U.S. Senate after Sam Nunn's retirement left an empty seat. Defeated in the 2002 election by Saxby Chambliss.
