But he switched jobs after just seven months, owing to the fact he was (according to Kissinger) "frustrated [by the] complex bureaucratic situation". He left to serve as special counsel to Vice President Nelson Rockefeller.
After leaving government Donaldson spent five years as dean of the Yale Business School. Then he returned to private industry, founding the investment firm Donaldson Associates. DA set up an offshore fund incorporated in the Cayman Islands and attracted $100 million in investors' capital. Ultimately the fund lost money.
Donaldson married his wife, Evan Burger, in 1960. She died suddenly in April 1994. A year and a half later, Donaldson remarried. According to Fortune magazine, his new wife, Jane Morrison, had already given birth to his son Andrew in 1991, and there were rumors she had been his mistress since the 1980s, this despite the fact that they were both married to other people.
