Liberty Media

COMPANY

Cable television properties. Descendent of TCI, which was absorbed by AT&T in 1999. Several subsidiaries were spun off under the aegis of Liberty Media in 2001. The company is controlled by billionaire John C. Malone, who owns a majority interest.

Liberty Media is the owner of QVC, and is a stakeholder in IAC/InterActiveCorp, Expedia, Encore/Starz cable channels, and half of the Game Show Network. Spinoffs include Liberty Global (broadband provider, 2005) and Discovery Communications (cable programming). As of 2007, it is acquiring control of DirecTV from News Corporation.

Several tracking stocks exist for subsidiaries (most prominently LINTA and LINTB) and the symbol L seems reserved on the NYSE for an eventual listing.
