One of four expansion teams added to the NBA in 1987. Relocated to become the New Orleans Hornets in 2002, after the city rejected owner George Shinn's demand that taxpayers build the team a new stadium.

The city began construction of a new arena in 2003, and in 2004 Charlotte was granted a new expansion team, the Charlotte Bobcats. After the relocated Hornets changed their name to the New Orleans Pelicans in 2013, the Bobcats were renamed the Charlotte Hornets in 2014.
