SPORTS FRANCHISE

Founded in the late 1870s as a barnstorming team colloquially but unofficially called the Alleghenys, playing home games in the Pittsburgh suburb of Allegheny PA (now part of Pittsburgh). Joined the American Association in 1882, that league's inaugural season. Bolted to the National League in 1887, under the name Pittsburgh Allegheneys. Rebranded the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1891. National League champions in 1901, 1902, 1903, 1909, 1925, 1927, 1960, 1971, and 1979; won the World Series in 1909, 1925, 1960, 1971, and 1979.
