Gender: Female Religion: Presbyterian Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: First Lady Nationality: United States Executive summary: Wife of US President William Henry Harrison Anna Harrison was the first First Lady to receive a formal education equivalent to a man's, attending a boarding school in New York, where her classmates included Nellie Custis, granddaughter of Martha Washington. Her father, a judge and founding father of Cincinnati, disapproved of her romance with a young soldier, William Henry Harrison, so the couple eloped.
After 36 years of marriage, he became America's ninth President, but Anna Harrison never lived in the nation's capitol. After the election, she suffered from a flu, and sent her widowed daughter-in-law Jane Irwin Harrison to act as hostess at the inauguration. Weeks later, as Anna Harrison was packing to join her husband in Washington, she received word that her husband had died.
Among their ten children, two sons were named John; John Cleves Symmes Harrison married Clarissa Pike, the daughter of explorer Zebulon Pike, and John Scott Harrison became a Congressman, and remains the only American whose father and son were both US Presidents -- his son, Anna and William Henry Harrison's grandson, was President Benjamin Harrison.
