Executive summary: Congresswoman from Pennsylvania, 1956-63

Chosen in a special election to succeed her husband, William Thomas Granahan. Her request succeed his seat on the Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee was declined, and instead she was seated on the the DC Committee, the Civil Service Committee, and the Post Office Committee. From the latter she conducted a campaign against the distribution of pornography via the mails, including a nationwide tour of obscenity hearings. Among her targets was Roger Vadim's classic film, Dangerous Liaisons (1959), calling it "insidious propaganda of immorality." In the 1960 census Pennsylvania lost one seat in Congress, and the Democratic cabal selected hers as the one to be removed. John F. Kennedy appointed her US Treasurer, though a fall in 1965 which required brain surgery and subsequent ill health forced her resignation in November 1966.
