Nagy served as Prime Minister 1953-55 but was forced to resign when it became clear he was too much of a maverick. He obtained the office again in 1956 during the uprising, which was crushed by collective intervention of the Warsaw Pact. Nagy was arrested in Romania and put to death even after a guarantee of safe passage had been given. He was rehabilitated in 1989 and given a state funeral.
