 Military service: Austro-Hungarian Army (WWI); Red Army Hungarian Prime Minister who sought separation from Soviet influence. He joined the Communist Party after serving in the Red Army in the first World War and its aftermath. He further became involved with Comintern in the 1920s-30s during his stay in the Soviet Union. Nagy served as Prime Minister 1953-55 but was forced to resign when it became clear he was too much of a maverick. He obtained the office again in 1956 during the uprising, which was crushed by collective intervention of the Warsaw Pact. Nagy was arrested in Romania and put to death even after a guarantee of safe passage had been given. He was rehabilitated in 1989 and given a state funeral.
