An on-line gaming enthusiast, Schilling founded 38 Studios in 2006 (named for his jersey number) to design and manufacture games. In 2010, 38 Studios accepted a $75M loan from the Rhode Island Board of Economic Development, contingent upon the company's relocation from Massachusetts to Rhode Island. In 2012, the company made headlines when it missed a due date for a $1.12M installment payment on its debt to the state, then laid off all its staff and declared bankruptcy.
