Much was made of his heroic April 2004 death, but in May it was revealed that Tillman was actually killed by friendly fire. He was shot at relatively close range -- ten yards -- by M16 fire. According to a Spc. Bryan O'Neal, who was at Tillman's side at the time of his death, Tillman's last words were, "Cease fire, friendlies, I am Pat fucking Tillman, damn it! [repeated multiple times] [then after another soldier asked for God to save them] Would you shut your fucking mouth?
