In 1962, Butts sued The Saturday Evening Post for defamation after they ran a story, "The Story of a College Football Fix." The jury decided in his favor, awarding $3M in damages, later lowered to $460,000. Reaching the US Supreme Court in a landmark case, the court found that "highly unreasonable conduct" on the part of a publisher was sufficient grounds for defamation.
