Military service: US Army (1974-)

Served in the U.S. Army from 1974-2011, and saw his first combat action in 2003, commanding the 101st Airborne Division in the capture of Baghdad. In 2004 he was assigned responsibility for training and equipping Iraq's military and police. From 2007-08 he was in command of all American troops in Iraq, and in 2008 he took charge of the United States Central Command (USCENTCOM), overseeing U.S. military operations in twenty nations. From 2010-11 he was commander of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan. In 2011 he was named Director of the US Central Intelligence Agency. In 2012 he resigned that post amidst revelations of an extramarital affair, and he later pled guilty to mishandling classified materials, admitting that he had passed classified information to his mistress.

Shot in the chest in a 1991 training accident, his life was saved when emergency surgery was performed by Dr and future Senator Bill Frist.
