As US Airways Flight 1549 took off from New York's La Guardia Airport on 15 January 2009 it flew through a flock of geese, and as the birds' feathers and bodies were sucked into the engines the plane lost power. Remaining relentlessly calm, Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, piloting the Airbus A320 with co-pilot Jeffrey Skiles, brought the plane down gently in the Hudson River. There were no fatalities or serious injuries among the 155 passengers and crew.

Previously, Sullenberger had participated in numerous accident investigations for the National Transportation Safety Board, and served as safety chairman for the pilots union. In 2007 he founded Safety Reliability Methods, Inc., a firm that provides safety consultations for the airline and energy industries. He earned his first pilot's license when he was 14, and flew F-4 fighters for the Air Force before becoming an airline pilot. In an interview after bringing down Flight 1549, he said, "I had this expectation that my career would be one in which I didn't crash an airplane." He retired as a US Airways pilot on 3 March 2010.
