Luis Posada Carriles AKA Luis Clemente Faustino Posada Carriles Born: c. 1928 Birthplace: Cuba
Gender: Male Religion: Roman Catholic Race or Ethnicity: Hispanic Occupation: Terrorist Nationality: Cuba Executive summary: Cuban terrorist in US custody Military service: 2506 Brigade; Commandos L Posada, known as "Bambi" by his family, is likely responsible for planning the bombing of a Cubana Airlines aircraft out of Barbodos International Airport, which exploded on 6 October 1976, killing 73 people. Evidence points to his recruiting of Hernan Ricardo Lozano and Freddy Lugo, both Venezuelan. Posada was jailed in Panama for a failed 2000 attempt to assassinate Fidel Castro, and held until pardoned by Mireya Moscoso soon before leaving office. In an interview with The New York Times, Posada stated that he had received $200,000 from Jorge Mas Canosa, of the Cuban American National Foundation, to engage in terrorism against Cuba. Presently, he is in American custody awaiting extradition to Venezuela. That procedure would be simple enough, except that many in Southern Florida consider Posada a patriot and Cuban national hero (despite being an admitted terrorist), and are lobbying against his extradition, though without legitimate basis -- the two countries maintain an extradition treaty still in force. He is also wanted in Cuba for a 1997 terrorist attack.
