The son of intelligence agents (his father was, among other things, CIA Bureau Chief in Beirut), in his youth Copeland travelled to interesting and somewhat dangerous places, becoming fluent in Arabic. He launched his first record label, Illegal Records, to debut The Police (his brother Stewart was the band's drummer). The single, "Fall Out/Nothing Achieving", sold a remarkable 70,000 copies. With the help of A&M Records he became the founder of IRS Records and another record label Ark 21. He has been manager of band Squeeze, Sting, Alannah Myles, etc.
