Regina Benjamin was raised in poverty and became the only doctor in a small, impoverished Alabama town, where she opened a clinic that accepts shrimp or crops as payment if patients lacked cash or insurance. She rebuilt the clinic twice after it was destroyed by hurricanes and a third time after it burned to the ground, and in 2008 she was awarded a $500,000 MacArthur Foundation "Genius Grant". A long-time advocate for prevention and wellness programs, she was nominated to become US Surgeon General on 13 July 2009, by President Barack Obama.
